Press Release

Chicago, IL – Today Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) joined Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-03), UNITE here Local 23 Amtrak Division President Donald Boyd, Transport Workers Union officials John Feltz and Jack Dinsdale, and dozens of UNITE HERE Amtrak workers at a rally calling for increased Amtrak funding.

In the proposed 2020 Budget, Trump slashes funding for Amtrak by 23 percent, proposes replacing long distance trains with buses, and cuts funding for new transit projects by 39 percent.

Congressman García issued the following statement:

“There are growing fears that President Trump and his allies want to pave the way to privatizing Amtrak. These budget cuts to reduce Amtrak services are just the first step. That’s why I joined my colleagues in sending Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson, a strongly worded letter inquiring about his efforts to downsize Amtrak’s workforce and reduce services.

“Investments to maintain, expand, and modernize our transportation networks have always paved the way for robust, long-term growth in our country. President Trump’s proposed budget cuts will decimate Amtrak and cut thousands of family-supporting jobs.

“These cuts will have devastating effects on the economy, our communities across the country, and the hardworking, dedicated families of those working at Amtrak.”
