Press Release

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to deny witness testimony and acquit President Trump of impeachable offenses:

“Like the President, Senate Republicans have placed their personal and political interests above the Constitution and our country. The American public was denied a full trial with witnesses whose testimony confirms the President’s wrongdoing.

“Republicans and even the President’s defense team do not dispute the facts: President Trump threatened to withhold military aid from a foreign country unless they agreed to help him win re-election. He then engaged in a cover-up to obstruct Congressional investigations.

“Senate Republicans can hide from witnesses. They can protect the President at all costs. But they cannot hide from history. Donald Trump violated the rule of law and trampled the Constitution.

“This is a shameful moment in our democracy that will not be forgotten.”
