WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after voting to pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act, a comprehensive election reform and anti-corruption package:

“Today, I proudly voted to expand and protect voting rights, limit the influence of money in politics, and prevent public officials from exploiting their positions for financial gain.

“The For the People Act ends many discriminatory practices like voter intimidation and distribution of misinformation, used to prevent Latino, Black and other marginalized communities from exercising their voting rights. By expanding early voting and vote-by-mail opportunities this bill makes it easier for everyone to vote.

“In Chicago, we know it can be difficult for candidates from diverse backgrounds to run a successful campaign, especially when corporate interests and wealthy, well-connected donors are funding their opponents. The For the People Act keeps special interests and dark money from controlling our elections.

“The Senate must pass and send H.R. 1 to the President and give power back to the people.”
