Congressman García Votes to Impeach President Trump

Press Release

Washington, DC — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after voting to impeach President Donald J. Trump for a second time:

“One week ago, President Trump incited an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential Election.

“The attack was no accident. For months, President Trump spread vicious lies and conspiracies about the legitimacy of our elections. When that did not work, he called on his supporters to violently storm the Capitol and subvert the will of the people.

“Congress must—in the strongest possible way—hold Trump accountable for violating the Constitution. He has torn apart our country, undermined the rule of law, and now ends his term with a deadly attack against the institutions he is sworn to protect. Future presidents must know they cannot get away with attempts to overthrow an election. The integrity of our democracy rests on the duty of Congress to impeach any president, including Trump, unfit to serve.

“I voted to impeach Trump once, and I did so again today. The President remains a clear and present danger to the Constitution and democracy. He must be removed from office immediately.”

Congressman García voted to impeach Donald Trump in December of 2019 following charges of soliciting foreign interference in the 2016 election.
