CHICAGO- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García issued the following statement on the passing of Richard Trumka, President of the AFL-CIO:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Richard Trumka, a tireless warrior who fought all his life for workers’ rights and justice. I join the Trumka family and the entire labor movement in mourning President Trumka, who inspired us to keep up the fight and to embrace new and creative strategies for building power for ordinary people.

“President Trumka led thousands of miners on strike across the country, fought against apartheid in South Africa, and guided the AFL-CIO during a pivotal moment for organized labor. He was a powerful advocate for immigrant’s rights and put workers’ rights back into U.S. trade policy in the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

“While fighting all these battles, he remained committed to his iconic mustache, a style choice we shared and a great conversation starter whenever I saw him. His life and legacy will forever inspire me as I keep up the fight for workers in this country.”
