Congressman García's Statement on Court Decision to Block ‘Remain in Mexico’ Policy
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement in response to the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit to block the Trump Administration Migrant Protection Protocols, also known as the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy:
“Today the court has agreed with immigration advocates and civil rights organizations: the United States cannot send people to a country where they face persecution, grave danger and even death. The ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy violates federal immigration law.
“Last month, I traveled to Matamoros, Mexico to see the impact of sending asylum seekers back to Mexico. I spoke with families and children who escaped unimaginable circumstances, only to be turned away at our border. I saw families living in makeshift tents in unsafe and unhealthy conditions--trying to survive without enough food and virtually no medical care.
“I promised these families I would share their stories and fight for them. That is why this week I stood with doctors and lawyers working on the US-Mexico border, and with Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, to call for an end to the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy.
“The court’s decision is good news. The ruling is a reminder that we must always stand up to injustice and work to block Trump’s harmful anti-immigrant policies. We must continue standing with the people, raising our voices and challenging President Trump’s discriminatory immigration policies.”
