Chicago, IL - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement that he will issue an executive order to halt immigration:

"Trump’s decision goes against our American values and foundations. Immigrants are on the frontlines in helping our country fight against the coronavirus pandemic. They are doctors, nurses, caregivers, farmworkers, educators and policymakers like me. They are our neighbors, brothers, sisters, fathers, and mothers. I think about my district, where immigrant families are struggling during a health crisis and putting themselves at risk every day to keep our communities afloat. Many of them have already felt the result of inhumane immigration laws that have separated them from their loved ones.

Trump is a man without a conscience who is using immigration to distract from his failures and is taking advantage of a public health crisis to further his xenophobic agenda. His decision will affect specialized workers, such as doctors trying to come to our country, who would not be allowed to enter. It will impact American citizens who are trying to bring their family members lawfully and immigrants who are seeking green cards and work visas for important jobs. At a time when we should be united and strong, Trump instead leads with division, hate, and fear. We will not let this misguided policy decision stand.”
