Congressman García’s Statement on Privatization of Puerto Rico’s Electric Grid
CHICAGO, IL.- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), Vice Chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources which has oversight on issues pertaining the U.S. territories, issued the following statement regarding Puerto Rico’s plans to privatize its electrical grid next week:
“Puerto Rico plans to privatize its electrical grid next week -- meaning worse service for the people of the island and more money for contractors instead of skilled workers. As Puerto Ricans struggle to recover from devastating hurricanes and earthquakes, this deal is a huge step backward. Thousands of my constituents have family members on the island, and my community is eager to end the cycle of corruption and mismanagement.
“I urge the Government of Puerto Rico to postpone this bad deal and reform its primary energy supplier in a transparent way, and I call on the Financial Oversight and Management Board (FOMB) to use its oversight powers to help Puerto Rico build a reliable, renewable electrical grid.”
