Congressman García’s Statement on Court Decision on DACA
CHICAGO, IL - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García issued the following statement on today’s court decision deeming the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program unconstitutional. The ruling bars new applicants but does not directly affect the status of current DACA recipients.
“It’s infuriating that the future of DACA recipients is always tied to a roller coaster of court rulings like the one in Texas today. Immigrants like these young people deserve a permanent solution, and today’s decision highlights the urgent need to create a path to citizenship.
“DACA recipients are our friends and neighbors. They are people like Elizeth, who put herself through college by selling tamales in my district and is now a community advocate, or like Bladimir, who is pursuing a career in the tech industry. These young people and their families can’t keep putting their lives on hold. They deserve to live without the fear of deportation, and we must do everything we can to protect and grant them legal status.
“It’s time for Congress and President Biden to demonstrate we truly value immigrants with our actions, not just our statements. It’s time to provide a pathway to citizenship. We can’t wait any longer.”
On July 6th, Congressman García became the first Democratic Member of the U.S. House of Representatives to indicate he would vote against a budget reconciliation package if it doesn’t include a pathway to citizenship.
