Congressman García: President Trump Must Be Held Accountable

January 11, 2021
Press Release

Washington, DC- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement regarding Congressional measures to hold President Trump accountable following the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol:

“The attack against the U.S. Capitol leaves a black mark on our nation’s history. Assailants, including those who encouraged the domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol must be held accountable, beginning with the man who incited the violence–President Donald J. Trump.

“We must immediately limit further harm and insurrection by this President. If he refuses to resign or if the Vice President and Cabinet fail to execute their Constitutional duty, under the 25th amendment, to declare the President unfit to serve, Congress must proceed with impeachment.

“I voted to impeach the President last year and will do so again for inciting insurrection.

“Though Trump bears great responsibility for the extreme partisanship in America, he did not act alone to radicalize the right or demonize the media. Beyond impeaching the President, we must investigate and expel elected officials who aided or abetted the domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“Congress must remove Trump from the White House and rebuke him in the strongest possible terms. Insurrection must be condemned, and the precedent must be set that any and all who instigate such acts against democracy will be brought to justice.”
