Press Release

CHICAGO, IL-  Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), member of the Congressional Labor Caucus, issued the following statement congratulating Liz Shuler and Fred Redmond as the new President and Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO:

“Liz Shuler is breaking glass ceilings today as she becomes the first female president of the largest labor organization in our country, and Fred Redmond, a fellow Chicagoan, is the first African American Secretary-Treasurer of the federation. Liz and Fred are the right team to continue the fight for economic, social, and racial justice at this historic moment.  The pandemic has disproportionately affected women and people of color in the workforce, and we need Liz and Fred’s lived experiences to help advance transformative policies for working people. I stand ready to work with AFL-CIO under their leadership to advance workers’ rights and ensure America’s working families get the support and resources they need. Together we can create a more just society.”
