Congressman García Applauds Buttigieg’s Confirmation as Transportation Secretary
Washington, DC — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) released the following statement after Pete Buttigieg was confirmed as the Secretary of Transportation.
“I offer my congratulations to Pete Buttigieg who was just confirmed by the US Senate to be the next Secretary of Transportation and the first openly gay cabinet secretary in U.S. history.
“From freight rail to public transit, green energy to commercial aviation, the next Transportation Secretary has the opportunity to make an immediate and lasting impact in Chicago and across the country.
“During his testimony, Secretary Buttigieg laid out his vision for smart transportation and infrastructure investments with a focus on access and sustainability. He also made clear that one of his first priorities would be a mask mandate on airplanes and public transportation systems to slow the spread of the coronavirus—a policy I have championed from the beginning of the pandemic to protect our CTA, Metra, and Pace Bus workers.
“I look forward to working with Secretary Buttigieg to center equity at the heart of our transportation and infrastructure vision, to tackle the climate crisis, and to create good-paying, union jobs in the process. With an opportunity to advance a landmark infrastructure package, together, we can rebuild our nation’s roads, bridges, transit systems, and airports. By making bold investments in our nation’s infrastructure we can also create millions of jobs and jumpstart our economy. I'll continue leading the charge on equity in transportation in the House, and I am eager to get to work with Secretary Buttigieg on our common goal of delivering results for the American people.
